YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MEETING WITH TRANSPORTATION ADMINISTRATION FOR YOUR SPECIFIC DAILY JOB DUTIES.
QUALIFICATIONS:
As set forth by the Rapides Parish School Board (Minimum)
- Must be at least 21 years of age, as set forth by state guidelines
- Pass an annual physical exam
- Current Louisiana Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with air brake, passenger and school bus endorsements
- Forty hours of pre-service training (30 hours classroom instruction, 10 hours of on the bus training)
- All other State certification requirements (Bulletin 1191, 1475, 1886)
- Knowledge of child behavior patterns and ability to maintain student discipline
- Knowledge of school system policies and procedures

School Administrator and/or Director of Transportation
SUPERVISES:
Such staff as assigned by the Director of Transportation
JOB GOAL:
To operate his/her school bus in a safe, economical manner and in compliance with state and local regulations.

Nine (9) months

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely transport his/her assigned students at each of his/her respective schools providing constant
- Report regularly and punctually within the time frame established by the Transportation
- Notify the Transportation Department and the Principal or designated person at each assigned school of impending absence, tardiness or mechanical failure.
- Be responsible for securing substitute-driver, “Buddy” and/or vehicle when
- Establish proper techniques and follow discipline procedures as established by the Rapides Parish School
- Complete accurately and timely all reports, assignments, and records indicated on the annual calendar and as may be required after an accident, for absences or any other special purpose.
- Accept and run additional routes as directed by the school-based administrators and/or the Transportation
- Maintain good public relations with students, parents, and school administrators
- Maintain a neat and clean vehicle, mechanically safe, in compliance with state and local
- Accurately record and report appropriate mileage for each and all designated
- Conform to Louisiana Laws concerning the safety and welfare and assigned
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of state and local traffic laws and local ordinances governing motor vehicles operations.
- Establish safe bus stop
- Operators shall secure for his/her vehicle confidential student data including name, address, phone number and pertinent health information.
- Attend and actively participate in all conferences, meetings, and/or in-service
- Keep his/her vehicle inspected, and maintained in accordance with local, state and federal
- Notify the Transportation Department of all accidents and
- Determine that any vehicle used in the absence of the driver’s vehicle shall be properly insured, inspected and reported to the Transportation Department and the insurance carrier.
- Maintain an acceptable driving record in personal vehicles and school bus as stated in the contract.
- The bus operator shall deliver the students to the same bus stop from which they are picked Special circumstances may allow a change in this procedure, but it must be approved by the school based administrator and/or the Director of Transportation.
- The bus operator shall avoid backing the bus to pick up or discharge students except as approved. (La. S. 32.281 states, “The driver of a school bus shall not back his/her vehicle unless such movement can be performed safely and without interfering with other traffic”)
- Perform all other duties, commensurate with the fulfillment of his/her responsibilities as the bus operator, as assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.
